Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Digital media has become a pervasive force in modern society, influencing various aspects of daily life, including parenting and child development. In Gombe State, as in many other regions, parents are increasingly using digital media tools to monitor, educate, and control their children’s activities, both online and offline. With the advent of mobile phones, social media, and internet access, parents can now engage in real-time communication and set boundaries on their children’s digital interactions. However, the use of digital media in parental control raises questions about its impact on child development. While digital media can be an effective tool for learning and communication, concerns about overuse, exposure to inappropriate content, and the potential effects on social skills and cognitive development remain prevalent. Research by Afolabi et al. (2023) suggests that while digital media can facilitate academic progress, excessive screen time can lead to challenges in emotional and social growth. This study explores how digital media affects parental control and child development in Gombe State, highlighting the benefits and risks of these technological advances.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The increasing use of digital media has reshaped parenting dynamics in Gombe State, yet there remains limited understanding of its long-term effects on child development. While some parents embrace digital media as an educational tool, others are concerned about its potential to contribute to behavioral problems, social isolation, and unhealthy development patterns in children. There is a need for empirical research to examine the influence of digital media on parental control strategies and its broader effects on children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development.

1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of digital media in shaping parenting practices and child development in Gombe State. The findings will contribute to the development of guidelines for parents, educators, and policymakers on the effective use of digital media to promote healthy child development.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on Gombe State, specifically examining the role of digital media in parental control and its effects on children’s development. The study will not cover other states or broader national perspectives on digital media usage and its impacts.
